April 18, 2012

Hillman passed away at home on April 18th at 6:03 pm in the presence of his loving wife, two children, his sister, sister in law and brother in law. He was 51 years old and died after a long and fiercely fought battle with colon cancer.

Hillman deeply loved his work, all of it -- film directing, graphic design, all aspects of new media -- and he especially loved his talented mentors, friends and students in these fields. His favorite topic was inspiration and he made sure to surround himself with it and find it in everything -- his colleagues, his family, New York City, art, film and all of you.

He loved you all and took energy from those with whom he corresponded, exchanged ideas and with his fans.

Sweet Prince Hill, true gentleman, good dad and passionate artist, Rest in Peace.

Reasons to be Creative Conference

My old friend John Davey is putting on a new conference called Reasons to be Creative but with the speakers he's lined up for the event the title is not really necessary.

Agency, Director, Production Studio?

Yes. I work directly with clients, collaborating, brainstorming and generally filling the role of agency and production house at the same time. I'm just as happy coming on board as a hired director under an existing agency...Continue

Events: New Design Matters/Artist Series Film

I recently teamed up with Debbie Millman and her Design Matters show and we produced another film – the first collaboration yielded the Lawrence Weiner short. This one we filmed live, in front of an audience of a little over 100 people at the SVA studio where Debbie records the Design Matters radio show. It features Malcolm Gladwell discussing with Debbie the design of his three book box set with the designer Paul Sahre and illustrator Brian Rea, along with DeeDee Gordon and project producer Josh Liberson.

Events: HC to speak at How, Boston

I unfortunately had to cancel at the conference I was most looking forward to in 2012, FITC Amsterdam coming up February 27th. The good news is I will be driving to How Design Conference in Boston. Another favorite conference of mine. Always a good time. I’ll be talking about my second book, MTIV, and how I would add to it now 10 years later. It will be a personal talk about what I’ve learned dealing with clients, the thin line between collaboration and cowardice, and how to remain always aware of your vision. Hope to see you there.
