Often a company will hire me to creative direct within their design team. This is one of my favorite ways to work as it allows me to engage with new talent and collaborate real time with the company’s designers, programmers and management. New York based eMusic was such a project. The project started in San Francisco, where I was living at the time. Adrianne DeLoia, eMusic’s Creative Director, was also in SF. So the two of us set up shop in her studio in the Mission District and with strong SF coffee and her very large, kind of scary cats, got to designing. We have somewhat different styles, with Adrianne leaning more towards expressive and me completely married to the grid. The result is a nice combination of both. The site navigation and page elements are consistent throughout the system, yet the site doesn’t feel overly gridded and compartmentalized. I especially like the left hand navigation, which is fed dynamically, based on what the user selects and in what order.
